Castle in the Sky (Tenkuu no Shiro Laputa) produced by Hayao Miyazaki is more than just a film, it is a bedrock of Studio Ghibli’s rich history, and an astounding odyssey. Two young protagonists Sheeta and Pazu embark on a quest to discover the mystery behind a mythical floating island called Laputa.
The first part of the narrative introduces Sheeta, a girl in possession of a peculiar blue crystal necklace. The government thugs attempt to snatch Sheeta, a girl with a pendant, so that they can use the pendant’s powers. However, she manages to outrun one of Captain Dola’s air pirates during the sky pirate captain’s attack on the airship. Falling from the sky, the pendant emits a force that lets her float down to the ground in a mining village which Pazu, an orphan boy who wishes to travel to Laputa finds her.
The moment Pazu sees Sheeta, he instantly connects with her essence and her bravery, leading them to forge a close friendship fast. Pazu tells that his father had taken a picture of Laputa which was actual proof that the land was real, although that picture was regarded as a fake. Sheeta admits that her pendant has some relation with Laputa, and together they are pulled into a violent chase while running away from the state agents headed by the ruthless Muska as well as Dola’s band of pirates.
The quest takes Sheeta and Pazu to the extreme beauty of nature in the form of green hills and rough seas as they desperately try to solve the mysteries that the island poses. During the course of their quest, they learn that the vertical island is not only a technological achievement but is also a store house of great power that can be used for building or destroying the world.
Upon finally arriving at Laputa, it is a breathtaking yet disturbing sight, an almost otherworldly civilization now reclaimed by the environment. Lo and behold, we learn the full essence of Sheeta’s lineage as she is brought forth as the heiress of the leaders of Laputa, and her pendant is the Island’s hiding key. But Laputa’s potentials have always been destructive, threatning plans by Muska. In the course of the final showdown; Sheeta and Pazu with great valor and sacrifice decide to use the pendant to disarm laputa’s weapons so that they are never used again. The island has risen to higher skies and untouchability, the price of civilization gone unheeded in search of power.
As the movie wraps up, we see Sheeta and Pazu head back to earth with an unbreakable cordel and us looking once again at the virtue of friendship, the tenacity and the bigger picture in life.

The rating of IMDb
Currently, Castle in the Sky enjoys an IMDb rating of 8.0 out of 10 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. Critiques and students of film alike have highlighted the film’s wonderful animation, its well-executed plot lines, characterization, and the manner in which various elements of action are creatively explored. The film has garnered a lot of praises for its original style of steampunk design and for addressing the theme of man within nature through the lens of technology.
Its story is simple enough when compared to many of Miyazaki’s later stories, but the Castle Sky will remain special to many because of its compassion to its viewers and its great storytelling. It has something for practically everybody: an action fix for the children, as well as more serious and moral concerns for older generation.
Heritage
After being racially and socially impaired, the Castle Ecosystem was released and over the years has been a reference point for many people and solidified the reputation of Studio Ghibli. Nowadays, the themes of ecology, anti-imperialism, and the quest for knowledge are still ideologically relevant and hotly debated, whilst the characters still remains an emblems of endurance and bravery.
